Cefixime Trihydrate is a semisynthetic, oral, third generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is effective against Gram positive, Gram negative and anaerobic bacteria including beta-lactamase producing strains. It acts by inhibition of bacterial cell-wall synthesis.
Clavulanic acid is a beta lactamase inhibitor produced by Streptomyces clavuligerus. Clavulanic acid is an irreversible inhibitor of intracellular and extracellular β-lactamases. The combination of Cefixime & Clavulanic acid is useful in treatment of bacterial infections caused by Beta lactam resistant strains.

Indications

It should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria.

It is Indicated for the Treatment of:-
⇒ Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections caused by Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis.
⇒Otitis Media caused by Haemophilus influenzae (beta-lactamase positive and negative strains), Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis, (most of which are beta-lactamase positive) and S. pyogenes.
⇒Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis caused by S. pyogenes.
⇒Acute Bronchitis and Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae (beta-lactamase positive and negative strains).
⇒Uncomplicated gonorrhea (cervical/urethral), caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae (penicillinase-and non-penicillinase- producing strains).

Mechanism of Action

It is a semisynthetic (partially manmade), oral antibiotic in the cephalosporin family of antibiotics and it stops bacteria from multiplying by preventing bacteria from forming the walls that surround them. The walls are necessary to protect bacteria from their environment and to keep the contents of the bacterial cell together so without a cell wall bacteria cannot survive and die and Clavulanic acid is a naturally derived beta lactamase inhibitor produced by Streptomyces clavuligerus. Clavulanic acid is an irreversible inhibitor of intracellular and extracellular β-lactamases, demonstrating concentration-dependent and competitive inhibition.

Adverse Effects

⇒ Diarrhea
⇒ Nausea
⇒ Vomiting
⇒ Skin rash

Conclusion

It is effective against Gram positive, Gram negative and anaerobic bacteria including beta-lactamase producing strains and used to treat Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections, Otitis Media, Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis, Acute Bronchitis and Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis, Uncomplicated gonorrhea because it stops bacteria from multiplying by preventing bacteria from forming the walls that surround them.
